New to You

Flight of the WASP -Michael Gross

The history of the men who forged our history beginning with the colonies. Through good behavior and bad, legal and illegal means, these ruling families molded us into the country we are. Well-educated, well-funded, and mostly well-mannered people. Excellent historical read, though an intentionally narrow focus.

The Lost Tomb- Douglas Preston. A collection of his essays from The Atlantic, The New Yorker et.al.

Thrilling, fascinating stories of adventure, science, history and archeology.

Remember, he also writes novels with Lincoln Child. David Grann wrote the Foreword. These guys are good!

Night Watch - Jayne Anne Phillips

A story of the Civil War and the family torn asunder by events and malevolent men. Sobering but outstanding read.

Expats, mixed-race, native, all question what they can and should get from their respective homelands. Excellent depiction of life in China.

The Sun Walks Down - Fiona McFarlane

Atmospheric story in South Australia in 1883. A young boy gets lost from his home and the town -and its cast of characters- rallies to find him. The interactions of family, lovers, police, pastors, artists, and Indigenous tell an intimate story.

Going Zero - Anthony McCarten

A cat and mouse thriller that never slows down, with an added creepy technical side to double down on the fact that you cannot hide from your online presence. (Remember The Hank Show!)

Worth a look:

The Mystery Guest -Anita Prose. Follow up to The Maid. Molly Gray is now Head Maid at The Regency Grand Hotel and there is another dead guest.

Welcome Home Stranger - Kate Christensen. Returning home as an adult and facing people you thought you knew or wanted to forget. Memory is a tricky thing.

Mercury- Amy Jo Burns. Marley West moves to Mercury PA as a teen and becomes enmeshed in the Joseph family- and all that entails.

The Ascent - Adam Plantinga. Written by a cop lending it authenticity- this is truly an action thriller. Non-stop and violent. How to escape a maximum-security prison when the inmates have taken control.

Black Sheep - Rachel Harrison. Our protagonist escapes her religious cult community but returns for a wedding with horrific consequences. Creepy with some mystical elements. I kept wanting to tell her "don't do that!"
