The Hero Next Door- Martha Raddatz
This is a sobering and uplifting collection of tributes to military heroes. I urge you to read it, particularly if you have little awareness of the actual work of our armed forces. This is a non-partisan work. The Audible version is excellent and lends itself to on and off listening as in the car, on a walk , or around the house. A++ Read this!

Lady Tremaine- Rachel Hochhauser
A fascinating retelling of the story of Cinderella, from the step-mother's perspective. Atmospheric writing, shockingly new POV, quick pacing- all combine for a satisfying read. A

Kin- Tayari Jones
Two girls, abandoned/orphaned by mothers, grow up and take different paths to find their futures. Captivating, beautiful writing. A.

John of John-Douglas Stuart
A young man returns home to his father's isolated weaving operation /farm in the Hebrides- desolate physically and emotionally. This is not an easy or comforting read, dealing with suffocating religious beliefs, a claustrophobic community and family dysfunction, but the writing is outstanding. It would be prime discussion material for an ambitious
book group. Challenge yourself. A-

The Shampoo Effect-Jenny Jackson
Now this is an easy, but not fluffy read. Big fan of the author as well as the Audible narrator of this book. Marin Ireland ( Google her and you will recognize her from many roles) enhances any book she narrates. Millennials facing turmoil of life, but there is no whining and the ending is satisfying and realistic. A-

I See You've Called in Dead-John Kenney
An obit writer is laid off after mistakenly posting his own obituary online.
Laugh-out-loud humor and some heartbreaking loss, but a good read to lighten your mood, overall. A-

Country People- Daniel Mason
City people move to rural Vermont. Satirical without being unkind. Was waiting for Darryl, Darryl, and Darryl to show up. (IYKYK) A-

Warning Signs-Tracy Sierra
A rustic mountaintop cabin full of toxic masculinity and two young boys (sons). An investment scheme, an avalanche.
Good, cold intrigue-I felt chilled the entire time I was reading. B+/A-
